Causes of
stress
The situations and
pressures that cause stress are known as stressors. We usually think of
stressors as being negative, such as an exhausting work schedule or a rocky
relationship. However, anything that puts high demands on you can be stressful.
This includes positive events such as getting married, buying a house, going to
college, or receiving a promotion.
Of course, not all
stress is caused by external factors. Stress can also be internal or
self-generated, when you worry excessively about something that may or may not
happen, or have irrational, pessimistic thoughts about life.
Common
external causes of stress
1. Major life changes
2. Work or school
3. Relationship difficulties
4. Financial problems
5. Being too busy
6. Children and family
Common
internal causes of stress
1. Chronic worry
2. Pessimism
3. Rigid thinking, lack of flexibility
4. Negative self-talk
5. Unrealistic expectations/Perfectionism
6. All-or-nothing attitude
Stress Management: 6 tips for reducing stress
1. Identify the sources
of stress in your life
2. Learn healthier ways
to cope with stress
3. Get moving
4. Connect to others
5. Make time for fun and
relaxation
6. Maintain balance with
a healthy lifestyle
Develop a "stress relief toolbox"
Come up with a list
of healthy ways to relax and recharge. Try to implement one or more of these ideas
each day, even if you're feeling good.

20 Minutes of Cycling Can Cure Heart Related Diseases - Study

Physical
inactivity is associated with many of the leading causes of lifestyle diseases
like obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cardiac ailments and even some forms of
cancer.
The WHO suggests that adults between the
ages of 18 to 64 years should indulge in at least three hours of
moderate-intensity physical activity throughout the week.
Amar Singal, the Senior
Interventional Cardiologist at Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute, New Delhi,
highlights several studies suggesting the same.
A study conducted by the Purdue
University concluded that regular cycling can cut your risk of heart disease by
a whopping 50 per cent.
Cardiovascular diseases are
responsible for over 30 per cent of the global deaths annually.
A daily cycle ride of just 20 minutes is sufficient to
achieve this target. Counting on the benefits of cycling, Singal explained,
"Cycling is one of the best cardio exercises for people of all age groups
and all body types. It not only helps burn calories and keeps weight under
control, but also helps build stamina and increase muscle and bone strength.
"At the same time, cycling is also a major stress
relieving exercise, especially when undertaken in a congenial environment such
as a park or a non-congested road. Regular cycling stimulates and improves your
heart, lungs and circulation, reducing your risk of cardiovascular
diseases,"
Being a low impact exercise, it is also soft on the
joints and unlike hard gym training sessions, it doesn't put you at risk of
overuse injuries or sprains. This is why it can also be taken up by elderly
people who have arthritic joints."
Do you know that just 20 minutes of
daily cycling can almost half your risk of dying from a heart-related
disease..?
In India too, cardiovascular disease
is the leading cause of deaths today, accounting for more than a quarter of all
mortalities.
The Global Burden of Disease study
has estimated that CVD death rate in India is 272 per one lakh population which
is higher than the global average of 235.
According to the World Health
Organization, insufficient physical activity is one of the ten leading risk
factors for death worldwide.
The health benefits of regular
cycling include:
- Increased cardiovascular fitness.
- Increased muscle strength and
flexibility.
- Improved joint mobility.
- Decreased stress levels.
- Improved posture and coordination.
- Strengthened bones.
- Decreased body fat levels.
- Prevention or management of disease.

Navratri (नवरात्रि) : The Many Health Benefits of The Navratri Thali Ingredients...!!!

Navratri is a nine-day
long festival celebrated mostly by Hindus across the country. The festivities
include people preparing for the celebrations through fasting and feasting. The
devotees observe a nine-day-long fast during this time and consume only
select ingredients such as kuttu atta, singhara atta, fresh vegetables,
milk, yogurt and makhanas.
Navratri meals might
sound simple, but they are so rich in nutrients that they have a lot of health
benefits, which includes weight loss and detoxification of the body.
Moreover, these foods are light on the stomach and can be digested easily. This
is important, since this is one of the reasons that people are advised to refrain
from eating meat, alcohol and grains and pulses during this time.
Heavy to digest, high-gluten flours like wheat, barley, oats,
etc., are not allowed during a Navratri fast. Instead, light cereals like
rajgira (amaranth), singhara (water chestnut flour), and sabudana are consumed.
Here’s a look at the health benefits of each of those ingredients.
Amaranth or rajgira: The flour contains
high amounts of lysine that helps in the absorption of calcium. This ingredient
contains high fibre and its phytosterols and oils help reduce cholesterol,
inflammation and hypertension.
Singhare ka atta (water chestnut flour): Predominantly simple
carbohydrates, contains vitamin B and E, and nutrients like potassium, zinc,
etc. The ingredient is an excellent coolant and detoxifies the body system. It
is used to prepare rotis or puris along with dishes made of sabudana (sago) and
potato during Navratri.
Kuttu atta (buckwheat flour): This ingredient is
very nutritious and contains body detoxifying properties. Though typical Navratri
food is fattening — because of fried potatoes, sabudana ki tikki,
sabudana papad, kheer, pakodas are all high-calorie foods — these foods
can only lead to an increase in weight and create even worse health conditions
for people with hypertension, diabetes, etc. Kuttu atta, as compared to wheat
and barley flour contains lesser calories and is high in carbohydrates. The
flour is free of saturated fats and is known to help curb appetite and
facilitate digestion.
Sendha salt (rock salt) is used in place of common salt to prepare food during
Navratris. It had detoxifying properties and is healthier than the refined
salt. The unrefined rock salt retains many nutrients like magnesium and calcium
that are lost during the refining of the salt.
Increased consumption
of fruits and vegetables, with
the exclusion of wheat and rice, provides the body with all the required
minerals and vitamins, thus, keeping the body active and giving the face a
natural glow. Roots and tubers like sweet potatoes, tapioca and potatoes, are
consumed more during Navratris. These foods provide the body with more energy
to the body and do not pressurise the digestive system much.
Navratri is celebrated
at the onset of the winters and many of the ingredients in a Navratri meal
help build immunity in the body, preparing it for cold weather conditions (of
course, this was before global warming messed up our planet). Fasting with
consumption of light foods is the most effective means of preparing the body
for the sudden climate change. In addition to fruits and vegetables, juices, lemonade and coconut water must be consumed to increase the
amount of antioxidants in your body. The antioxidants help in detoxification
and boost the immunity.
Extreme heat-producing
foods like garlic, flaxseeds, fenugreek seeds, garam masala, non-veg foods,
etc., are avoided and so are extreme coolants like onions, dhania powder, chia
seeds, basil seeds, etc. Hence, the body temperature acquires a balance from
the foods consumed.
Protein is the nutrient
required for the wear and tear of the body. Milk and milk products, dry fruits and nuts like peanuts, almonds and
walnuts, etc., are good sources of protein sources and are consumed in
abundance during Navratri fasting. Proteins in these foods help in forming
new cells and repairing old damaged body cells, thus, maintaining better health
and an active life.

Dengvaxia,
world's first vaccine for the deadly disease dengue has been approved in 11
more countries.
Dengvaxia was approved by the Health Sciences Authority on Tuesday
following a seven-month review into its potential benefits and risks, and will
be made commercially available in several months' time.
Sanofi-Pasteur,
a unit of French pharmaceutical company Sanofi, that manufactures the only
approved dengue vaccine on Tuesday said that the vaccines has received approval
in 14 countries.
Recently, the health
authorities of Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore have granted the approvals for
Dengvaxia. Mexico, the Philippines, Brazil, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Paraguay,
Guatemala, Peru, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore have already granted it the
approval.
The dengue vaccine also
prevented eight of 10 hospitalisations due to dengue and 93 per cent of serious
dengue cases like the deadly hemorrhagic form of the disease, over the 25-month
study follow-up period of the large-scale efficacy studies conducted in 10
endemic countries in Latin America and Asia.
Dengue: which causes flu-like illness, and occasionally
develops into a potentially lethal complication called severe dengue -- has
long been an issue on the small tropical island nation.
According to information from the
National Environment Agency, there are currently six high risk areas in the
country where 10 or more cases of dengue have been logged.
According to major clinical studies
involving individuals between the ages of two and 16, Dengvaxia is effective in
reducing dengue illness by 60 per cent, and severe dengue illness by 84 per
cent.

WORLD HEPATITIS DAY - 28 JULY

Viral hepatitis is inflammation of the liver caused by a virus. There are five different hepatitis viruses, hepatitis A, B, C, D and E.
World Hepatitis Day is one of eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO), along with World Health Day, World Blood Donor Day, World Immunization Week, World Tuberculosis Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Malaria Day and World AIDS Day.
Hepatitis B is spread when blood or other body fluids from an infected person enters the body of another person. A pregnant woman who has hepatitis B can pass the virus to her infant at birth without timely intervention. In fact, 90% of infected infants develop a lifelong infection, and an estimated one-fourth of them will die prematurely. To address this public health concern, all pregnant women in the United States and many other countries are now routinely screened for hepatitis B. If a pregnant woman has hepatitis B, health care providers take extra effort to make sure her newborn gets timely vaccination to prevent this deadly disease. Completing the vaccine series can prevent transmission of the virus in over 90% of infants born to infected women. To protect every infant from potential infection, CDC recommends all babies get the first shot in the hepatitis B vaccine series before leaving the hospital, and completing the vaccine series as recommended.
Approximately 500 million people worldwide are living with either hepatitis B or hepatitis C. If left untreated and unmanaged, hepatitis B or C can lead to advanced liver scarring (cirrhosis) and other complications, including liver cancer or liver failure. While many people worry more about contracting AIDS than hepatitis, the reality is that every year 1.5 million people worldwide die from either hepatitis B or C faster than they would from HIV/AIDS.
